Yemen Haraaz Obara



This coffee is from a single farmer lot grown by Ahmed Sagheer.  This lot located in the high village of Obara.  After harvest, his cherries were separated and brought to the Al Ezzi facility to be carefully dried and milled.

They are sourced from only 480 trees high in the village of Obara by AL EZZI, a company founded by an entrepreneur, Shabbir A. Ezzi, whose focus is on both qualities of coffee and quality of life for smallholder producers in the Haraaz Region. This offering provides full traceability and transparency. Encouraging producers like Sagheer, the proud farmer of this nano lot, to replace their narcotic qat plants with coffee. The support provided through receiving stations in the area, and over 14 years, proud producers of Haraaz coffees have eradicated the qat narcotic and enjoy a stable life while inspiring other regions of Yemen to follow their path for a better experience.

Though it was once some of the world's most prized coffee, from one of the world's wealthiest places, Yemen's agricultural-export industry has all but collapsed since the 1950s, as a prolonged period of political, economic, cultural, martial, and climatic unrest has gripped the country. Without significant intervention, coffee production here appeared doomed, as it has faced widespread replacement by a narcotic plant called qat, which is more comfortable and more profitable to grow.

Shabbir A. Ezzi, an entrepreneur with a vision for the revival of Yemeni coffee, made a significant investment of time, money, and on-the-ground engagement to initiate programs to incentivize coffee production. He offers a stable marketplace for the farmers who are willing and able to meet Ezzi's demanding standards.

He pays competitive prices, offers traceability and recognition for Yemen coffees that are picked ripe and processed meticulously. The coffee is dried on raised beds or impeccable patios, rather than allowed to dry rooftops inconsistently, the traditional method. As a result, Ezzi has partnered with more than 2,500 small coffee farmers in the stepped farmland of Haraaz and has encouraged many to focus their energy and precious resources on coffee, rather than qat. The coffees themselves capture Yemen's glory days: Big, red, ripe fruit, jammy acidity, dense mouthfeel.

The World's Most Traditional Coffee

This coffee is produced in the Haraaz Mountains with ancient methods, resulting in natural, dry-processed coffee, the same way it was over five hundred years ago.  The coffee is grown using steep, rocky terraces clinging to the sides of semiarid mountains below ancient stone villages, rising like extensions of the mountains themselves. In the summer, when the scrubby little coffee trees are blossoming and setting fruit, misty rains temporarily paint the Harrazi mountains into a bright green spectacle. In the fall, the clouds gradually disappear as the air turns dry, the coffee fruit ripens under the Arabian sun. The ripe berries are handpicked and placed onto dry on the roofs of the stone houses. Yemen is a sought after origin by connoisseurs around the world; the heirloom coffee varieties are the same as they were when they first were discovered 14 centuries ago. Each bean contains the flavor of the history of coffee and how it came to seduce the world with its unique, stimulating flavor.
