About
Coffee connoisseurs recognize 100% Kona Coffee as more than "just coffee.” Kona Coffee has a Story to tell. This rare coffee is grown under the afternoon clouds shading the coffee trees on the slopes of the Hualalai and Mauna Loa volcanically active Mountains. This unique environment brings Kona coffee a unique flavor profile, an unmatchable sweetness, and delicate floral undertones.
After Kona's dry winters, the rain comes and turns the coffee trees into beautiful flowering bushes with an incredible jasmine scent; when autumn comes, the cherries that replaced the flowers are mature, and harvest begins. Only coffee grown in Kona's North and South districts on the Big Island of Hawaii can be called Kona Coffee.
Kona coffee is handpicked, pulped, fermented, washed, dried, and hulled. Top grades include extra fancy, fancy, No.1, and prime. The grade is a function of the size of the beans; it happens that a peak can be superior in taste sometimes. At Roasting Plant, we cup blind to select the best tasting bean for our customers regardless of the size.
Well, now that you know more about Kona in general, let's take a look at this current lot. From the known Greenwell Farm, a pioneer in the area that has carried on the family coffee know-how for generations! Here’s the story:
Henry Nicholas Greenwell arrived in the Kona District from England in 1850 and, over the next forty years, built a successful life in rural Kona with his wife, Elizabeth Caroline. They ran a general merchandising store and coffee exporting operations as well as farming and ranching businesses. Mr. Greenwell became well known in Europe and America as the most prominent shipper of Kona Coffee. The descendants of Henry Nicholas and Elizabeth Caroline Greenwell continue to maintain the tradition of high quality, which can be tasted in every cup of Greenwell Farms' amazing and very rare coffee.
This specific lot comes from multiple small farmers in the area of KONA Kealakekua, delivering their cherries to the Greenwell farm that skillfully processed it.
